Regimental History says, "Resigned 1862". Conrad Bush (Bushresear@aol.com) notes, "It was very prevalent at the time for officers to resign rather than be discharged for cause. The 76th was like most units of the time, officered by men with no previous experience and many soon found they were not fit for the duty and resigned. GIBSON, OSCAR.-Age, 19 years. Enlisted, October 28, 1861, at Berkshire, to serve three years; mustered in as, private, Co. Oscar H. Gibson enlisted from Tioga county on 29 October, 1861 at Berkshire. Private Gibson was taken prisoner at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. He died at Belle Isle prison camp, Richmond, VA in December, 1863. In reading through the pension apps, it appears there was some confusion in the army records as to date of death. They first showed it to be in November, then some records showed a parole to a hospital. A third showed date of death as December. His name is inscribed on a small obelisk in the Howland Hill cemetery, near Lisle, NY, along with a young brother, Burdett, a sister, Janett, and his mother, Laura Howland Gibson, who died a year after he did. An older brother was with a PA volunteer outfit which reenlisted in DC and hiked on down to South Carolina.

Greenfield apparently enlisted again, 8/14/1862 at Groton, as a private in Co. K, 137th NY, discharged 10/26/1862 to enlist in US Army. (obituary, personal communication from Betty Auten) If he ever did enlist in the Regulars, it's odd that only his service in the 76th is listed on his tombstone.

Greer's minor sister's pension is application on file at National Archives.

The Andersonville prisoner database says Greer died 8/26/64 of Diarrhea. He is buried in grave number 6863 at Andersonville.

GROSS, ALBERT.-Age, 21 years. Enlisted at Cherry Valley, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. H, October 15, 1861; captured in action, August 29, 1862, at Bull Run, Va.; paroled, no date; re-enlisted as a veteran, January 6, 1864; transferred to Co. B, January 1, 1865; to Co. C, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 28, 1865.

GROVER, ANDREW JACKSON.-Age, 31 years. Enrolled, September 16, 1861, at Cortland, to serve three years; mustered in as captain, Co. A, October 8, 1861; wounded, in action, August 28, 1862, at Gainesville, Va.; discharged for disability, December 20, 1862; again enrolled and mustered in as major, March 10, 1863; killed in action, July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa.
Commissioned captain, January 17, 1862, with rank from October 4, 1861, original; major, February 6, 1863, with rank from November 20, 1862, vice C. E. Livingston promoted; (posthumously) lieutenant-colonel, not mustered, July 23, 1863, with rank from June 25, 1863, vice C. E. Livingston promoted.

GUERNSEY, CHARLES H.-Age, 18 years. Enlisted, October 10, 1861, at Middleburg, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. 1, October 18, 1861; promoted corporal, prior to April, 1862; died of typhoid fever, June 8, 1862, at Eckington Hospital, Washington, D. C.;  Listed as buried in the Military Asylum Cemetery, Washington, D.C. (now the Soldiers Home National Cemetery)

 

GUERNSEY, GEORGE M.-Age, 18 years*. Enlisted, September 14, 1861, at Freetown, to serve three years; mustered in as corporal, Co. D, October 4, 1861; returned to ranks, April 25, 1862; died of disease, August 2, 1862, at hospital, near Falmouth, Va.
*Prior service as private in Co. D, 12th NY Vol Infantry. Discharged from 12th NY as a minor, recorded age of 15 August 29, 1861. Note that he once again represented himself as 18 when enlisting in the 76th - one month after being discharged from the 12th as underage! Mother's pension application on file at National Archive.

Va.; mustered in as first lieutenant, Co. C. August 22, 1864; captured, in action, October 1, 1864, at Poplar Grove Church, Va.; paroled, no date; discharged, May 18,1865.
Commissioned first lieutenant, September 16, 1864, with rank from August 21, 1864, vice T. F. Welden killed in action.

GUILES, GEORGE O.-Private, Co. G, Thirtieth Infantry; transferred to Co. F, this regiment, May 25, 1863; captured in action, May 5, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; transferred to Co. E, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 31, 1865; also borne as Gold Gyles. Father's pension application at National Archives says Missing In Action at Wilderness, assumed dead.
