UNDERWOOD, GEORGE W.--Age, 28 years. Enlisted, October 19, 1861, at New Woodstock, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. F, October 25, 1861; discharged for disability, October 27, 1862, at Washington, D.C.

Underwood was born on April 25, 1833, and died on October 1, 1903, and is buried in the cemetery in New Woodstock, NY.

UTTMAN, ABRAM.--Age, 20 years. Enlisted, October 18, 1861 at Carlisle, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. H, October 29, 1861; discharged for disability, June 23, 1862, at Washington, D.C.; also borne as Ottman.


VALOIS, CHARLES.--Age, 30 years. Enlisted at Rikers Island, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. F, January 23, 1862; re-enlisted as a veteran, January 26, 1864; captured in action, May 5, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; paroled, no date; transferred to Co. F, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 31, 1865. 

VANANKIE, MORTIMER.--Age, 20 years. Enlisted, at Auburn, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. I, July 21, 1863; wounded in action, May 6, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; transferred to Co. C, October 1, 1864; to Co. D, November 8, 1864; discharged for disability, June 6, 1865, at Elmira, N. Y.

VAN BENTHUSEN, MYRON.--Private, Co. D, Thirtieth Infantry; transferred to Co. E, this regiment, May 25. 1863; transferred to Co. A, November 18, 1864; to Co. C, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 28, 1865.

VAN BUREN, JOHN H.--Age, 18 years. Enlisted at Cherry Valley, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. H, October 22, 1861; wounded in action, July 1-3, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa.; re-enlisted as a veteran, January 25, 1864; promoted corporal, July 1, 1864; transferred to Co. B, January 1. 1865; to Veteran Reserve Corps, January 23, 1865; discharged, November 21, 1865, as of Twenty-second Company, Second Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps.

VANDERPOOL, JOHN.--Age, 28 years. Enlisted, September 30, 1861, at Cortland, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. F, October 4. 1861; wounded in action, August 28, 1862, at Gainesville, Va.; transferred to Co. D, July 1, 1864; discharged, October 24, 1864 near Petersburg, Va.

After the war, Vanderpool gave a deposition on the death of Thomas Hoffman, his tent mate, in the Battle of Gainsville.

VANDERPOOL, SIMON.--Age, 25 years. Enlisted at Dryden, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. F, October 9, 1861; deserted, May or June, 1862; apprehended and transferred to Co. C, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry.

VANDERWACKER, COMFORT.--Age, 28 years. Enlisted at Catlin, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. I, July 21, 1863; wounded and missing in action, May 5, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; no further record.

VAN HORNE, WILLIAM G.--Age 23 years. Enlisted, September 28, 1861, at Springfield, to serve three years; mustered in as corporal, Co. K, October 14, 1861; transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps, June 20, 1863.

VAN PATTEN, GEORGE.--Age, 18 years. Enlisted, December 10, 1861, at Cobleskill, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. I, December 13, 1861; died of typhoid fever, July 2, 1862, at Fredericksburg, Va.

Van Rorken, M., Co. I - Listed in "New York Soldiers Living in Michigan, 1891" as living in Waconsta, Michigan. Not in AG Report. 

VAN RYAN, PETER.--Age, 23 years. Enlisted at Auburn, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. E, July 24, 1863; wounded in action, June 18, 1864, before Petersburg, Va.; transferred to Co. A, November 18, 1864; to Co. K, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 28, 1865. 

VAN SHEFLIR, ABRAHAM.--Age,.30 years. Enlisted at Auburn, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. E. July 24, 1863; discharged for disability, July 22, 1864, at Judiciary Square Hospital, Washington, D. C.

VAN SLYCK, EDWARD D.--Age, 28 years. Enrolled, September 28, 1861, at Cortland, to serve three years; mustered in as first lieutenant, Co. D, November 12, 1861; wounded in action, August 28, 1862, at Gainesville, Va.; discharged, October 7, 1862. Commissioned first lieutenant, January 17, 1862, with rank from November 12, 1861, original. 

Van Slyck died May 16, 1897, and is buried in Cortland Rural Cemetery, Cortland, NY. He married Catherine Fisher (1833-1907)

VAN VALKENBERGH, BENJAMIN.--Age, 28 years. Enlisted, September 21, 1861, at Albany, to serve three years; mustered in as corporal, Co. I, October 14, 1861; returned to ranks, prior to April, 1862; mustered out with company, December 1, 1864.

VAN VALKENBURG, JOHN. --Age, 25 years. Enlisted at Cherry Valley, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. H, November 4, 1861; deserted, May 19, 1862, at Washington, D.C.

VAN VALKENBURG, OTHELLO.--Age, 25 years. Enlisted at Cherry Valley, to serve three years, and mustered in as corporal, Co. H, November 14, 1861; deserted, December 20, 1862, expiration of furlough.

VAN WIE, DANIEL--Age, 21 years. Enlisted at Bath, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. E, July 16, 1863; wounded in action, May 12, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; discharged for disability, December 31, 1864, at Mower Hospital, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pa.

VANWORMER, DAVID.--Age, 18 years. Enlisted at Cortland, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. D, October 22, 1861; deserted, May 19, 1862, at Fort Slocum, D.C. David C. Van Wormer was born near Albany, New York, Jan 3, 1843. His mother's maiden name was Cooper.  David with his brother was placed in an orphanage in Onondaga County.  He was adopted out and in 1860 he was apprenticed to a blacksmith in Madison County.  He stated that he ran away from cruel people to enlist.  After deserting from the 76th he enlisted in the 157th New York Infantry as David C. Cooper.  He was wounded May 2, 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Va.  He was honorably mustered out July 10, 1865.  He married Jane Beld or Belden in 1866, and died in Morris, Otsego County, NY, on Sept. 1, 1924.

VERREAN, FRANCIS E.--Age, 22 years. Enlisted, September 14, 1861, at La Peer, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. D, October 4, 1861; wounded in action, August 29, 1862, at Bull Run, Va.; died of his wounds, October 2, 1862, at Cliffburne Hospital, Washington, D.C. Buried in the Military Asylum Cemetery, Washington, D.C. (now the Soldiers Home National Cemetery) as "Francis Verun".

VOLK, WILLIAM.--Private, Co. F, Thirtieth Infantry; transferred to Co. G, this regiment, May 25, 1863; wounded in action, July 1, 1863, at Gettysburg, Pa., and May 5, 1864, at the Wilderness, Va.; discharged for disability caused by wounds, May 15, 1865, at Philadelphia, Pa.

VORHEES, JOHN.--Age, 20 years. Enlisted, October 12, 1861, at Springfield, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. K, October 14, 1861; killed in action, August 28, 1862, at Gainesville, Va.

VOSBURG, MARION E.--Age, 18 years. Enlisted at Cortland, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. D, November 16, 1861; discharged for disability, April 25, 1862, at Washington, D. C.

Vosburg's discharge certificate (in Mike Brown's collection) spells his name "Vasburg". He was born in Cortland County, NY, and at the time of discharge was 5' 8 3/4" tall, with dark complexion, black eyes and brown hair. His occupation was given as "Farmer". His discharge certificate was signed by the Surgeon in Charge at the Patent Office Hospital in Washington, and also by J. Magruder, "by command of Brig. Gen'l Wadsworth, Mil. Gov. D.C." 

He reenlisted on August 5, 1863, in Company B of the the 2nd Provincial New York Cavalry, and transferred to Company B of the 15th New York Cavalry. He was captured and released in March 1865, and was discharged on August 9, 1865. 

After the War he returned home for a short time and moved to Pennsylvania, where he married a woman by the name of Nancy Ireland. There, they had their 1st (of 5) children; Burton David Vosburg. They settled in Orleans, Harlen County, Nebraska, in the early 1870's, and he applied for an Invalid's Pension on February 17, 1876. Marion stayed in Nebraska until his death on December 19, 1920. Nancy drew his Civil War pension from January 28, 1921 (see the widow's pension card) and died in California (where she had moved in with a daughter) in the mid 1930's.

VROMAN, ISAAC W.--Age, 28 years. Enlisted at Jasper, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. D, July 18, 1863; discharged for disability, December 29, 1863, at Alexandria, Va.
