REED, MELVIN.--Age, 18 years. Enlisted, October 18, 1861 at De Ruyter, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. G, October 21, 1861; captured in action, October 1, 1864; paroled, no date; transferred to Co. G, One Hundred and Forty-seventh Infantry, January 28, 1865.


Letter from Melvin Reed - not dated. The letter is on Camp Doubleday stationery. The 76th NY was in "Camp Doubleday", apparently part of Fort Massachusetts at Washington, DC, in March through May, 1862. 


Dear friends you must excuse me for not writing before but I have been waiting to get my pay. We get 2 months pay to day and tomorrow. We will get the rest I will send you 40 dollars by some one I will send you 5 dollars in this letter and the rest by some one else it is a rainey [sic] day to day the trees are all in blloom [sic] you must excuse my short letter good by
